Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that “Creates change in another.”
-Seth Godwin
“Sheena Burton creates abstract and free-flowing floral paintings. Each brushstroke, a testament to the power of nature and the human spirit to transcend even the most trying of circumstances. Her works, like a window into a magical world where beauty and serenity reign, are both meditative, and magically alluring combined with a sense of deep emotion.”
-Tutor, NAS
New Zealand based artist now living and working in the rural South Island. A bold colourist, that pushes the boundaries and isn’t afraid to ignore the rules. Her practice spans drawing, print making and painting. With a unique visual language (as she describes) “A continually evolving and changing process influenced by the rhythm and cycles of life and nature. The strong use of colour creates tension and energy rendered in lush floral-scapes. With the engagement of realism and abstraction, representative of life itself, she believes the interaction between humanity and the environment is a really important theme. “The worlds leaders are fixated on power and control and this has created a world with a lot of darkness and with little regard for humanity or sustainability of nature”.
Her work is held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, Canada America and England. She comes from a background in textile and design and studied art history and painting by the old masters during her decade living and working in Europe.
Predominantly a self taught artist while developing her painting knowledge by completing advanced colour theory at the National Art School, Sydney, and further developing her painting practice with continued studies at The New York Studio Art School. “I have been really fortunate to befriend some accomplished and incredibly talented artists and lecturers that have given me so much of their time to mentor and guide me on this journey”.
Next Summer Sheena will be co-hosting art and painting retreats in South Western France. The link to the bookings will be available on Sheena’s website.
