South of Bordeaux.

People living in the South of France during the time of the troubadours spoke Occitan, not French, as their native language. Occitan descended from Latin and was a sister language of Italian, Spanish, and French; it is what we call today a Romance language, a term and concept that developed in the nineteenth century.
